LOW MILL OUTDOOR PURSUITS RESIDENTIAL

16TH TO 18TH MARCH 2012

10 students from key stage 4 recently had the chance of a trip to Askrigg in the Yorkshire Dales. We stayed at Low Mill Activity Centre.

Askrigg was used for thevillageofDarrowbyin the James Herriot TV series. The location is beautiful and the accommodation excellent. Students shared responsibility for setting tables for meals, washing up and drying dishes afterwards. They also took pride in keeping their rooms tidy so there was more time for relaxing in the common room playing pool and table tennis, and generally socialising together.

The instructors motivated the group so that they were able to get ready for each activity in less than 8 minutes. The activities were challenging and great fun. Most students rose to conquer all the challenges.

The first evening the group went for a night walk. They worked together to remember the instructions given to them and practised looking after each other. They also got a great view of Venus and Jupiter shining through the darkness. On Saturday morning students climbed over and under obstacles as they waded through a stream in a narrow gorge. On the same day students went underground in caves, some completed the final narrowest cave which required crawling on their fronts then their backs to get through. That evening it was time for the zip wire in the dark. This was really quite a challenge especially after the long day of activities already completed. Those who completed it were rightly very proud of their achievement.

On Sunday it was up early to go abseiling from a disused viaduct. Once again the spirit of the group was fantastic as staff saw students really getting involved and showing lots of bravery. No sooner had they completed one abseil than they were keen to have another go.

All-round it was a fantastic weekend trip, the food was delicious too and the students can be really proud of the way they  worked together and represented the School so well.

We are already planning next year’s trip!
